No further action over McLaren clash

NEWS STORY

Singapore stewards deem that both McLaren drivers were responsible for Sprint clash and consequently take no further action.

Lando Norris attempted to overtake Oscar Piastri on the inside at Turn 5. However, a collision occurred at the apex.

Piastri explained that he had not expected his teammate to attempt an overtake and, after turning in, noticed Norris on the inside and attempted to leave space.

Norris said that he saw an opportunity to overtake and that the front axle of his car was ahead of the mirror of his teammate's prior to the apex and therefore expected to be left space.

As he approached the apex, the space was less than he had anticipated so he had to use the inside kerb and braked and a collision occurred.

The stewards considered that both drivers had contributed to the incident and that neither driver was wholly or predominantly to blame for the collision. Therefore they opted to take no further action.

Andrea Stella wasn't quite as understanding.

"We were in a position to score good points," he told Sky Sports. "Instead, we saw two McLarens having contact, basically, going out of the race.

"Lando could score one point," he added, "but definitely that's not enough.

"Seeing two McLarens making contact like that is simply not acceptable," he insisted. "This is something that we will discuss with our drivers. We will do it in private. We will reiterate that the team's interest is far bigger than any of us.

"There's no ego," he continued. "There's no person who's bigger than the interest of the McLaren Formula 1 team. This will be reiterated.

"I'm sure, like always, this will be a conversation that will lead to the team being more united and even stronger."
